Search Engine Localization
In the world of Seach Engines the goal is to provide the client with the most appropriate results for their query. This process has to take into account a multitude of factors to try and narrow the results to the individual.
The other side of the coin is that every supplier wants to be top of the list for each search if the query is relevant to them.
With the Worldwide reach of the Internet many companies are able to offer services suitable to many Geographic regions from a single lcoation.
However, one aspect of Search Engines and many International websites which is in common use is the detection of client location. With client location information it is possible to offer customised content suitable to the individual, which in many cases may simply be language but can also be geographically local vendor information. In particular Search Engines use this information to narrow down the results returned to a user in a number of ways. One example of this is using Google. Should you type www.google.com in a browser in the UK, it will redirect you to www.google.co.uk in order to service your request from a local server and improve your experince. In addtion to this, the UK version of the website will prefer to return results which it deems to be relevant to the UK, as it expects the user will prefer a local serivce in the local language. Furthermore, the UK version of the website offers a radio button option to restrict pages to the UK only.
These features are all well and good, but it is possible that they will negitvely impact the quality of the results in certain circumstances.
The goal of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is to improve a website’s chances of being returned in a significant position in the response to a relevant query. This topic is full of methods to enhance the content of a site but little is offered in terms of localisation and addressing these issues.
An example of where localisation could negatively impact your rankings is related to shared hosting. Your web host offers a hosting package for you website they may not specify where that host is located. If your company trades exclusively in the UK but your web host has posted your pages on a server in France, you will be biased against or excluded from UK based searches.
In other examples you may be happy yo offer services to Europe or Worldwide destinations, however, if your hosting is based in the UK exclusively you will not achieve high rankings compared to other companies hosted in countries local to the competative companie’s hosting.
With SEL you can present your website to the world in any country you choose. All of this is achieved without the cost of duplicating your existing hosted services in these countries.
SEL can target your site to the specific audience you desire, or open your site to the world!
